1. choose a goal

Public relations, or PR, is the management of communication to promote and maintain the image and reputation of a person, organization, or brand. Are you going to get started with PR? Then it is important to set your goal.

There are various reasons why an organization uses PR. One of the reasons is to increase your brand awareness. Another goal may be to improve your organization's image. By having a goal, you ensure that PR professionals understand you and with your objective can get started.

2. determine your target group

What is the target group that you want to reach? The key message comes across well when you know your target group. Describe the demographics of your target audience, such as age, gender, and location. Also, delve deeper into the interests of your target group. Discover the values, interests, and lifestyle of your target audience. Get to know the target group and adapt your message accordingly.

Also research what kind of communication channels your target group uses. Examples include: social media, newspapers, TV (such as news or talk shows), radio, e-mail, face-to-face interaction — or a combination of channels. Once you know which channels are involved, it is important to address the target group there in a way that suits them.

3. be concise and clear

The key message is the message you want to convey to your target group. The key message is usually concise, clear and specific. The key message contains the most important points you want to communicate. Make sure you don't share more information than necessary. By sharing more information, your target group loses attention and the core message doesn't stick.

4. use storytelling

Stories have the power to engage people and encourage them to take action. This is very important when it comes to drafting a key message. Share authentic, relevant, and engaging stories to reinforce and support the core message. By using storytelling, you build a relationship with your target group and build trust. By using storytelling in PR, your message stays with the audience longer and is conveyed more effectively.

5. Be consistent

If you're conflicting, you're causing confusion among your target audience. So make sure you're always consistent, even when using multiple channels. Consistency contributes, among other things, to the credibility of a brand, organization or message. When people repeatedly encounter the same message, trust builds.

By applying these points, you help your organization stand out and make a lasting impact. Stay consistent, authentic and goal-oriented, and delve into your target audience. Do you want help creating a key message that makes you stand out? Feel free to contact us and we'll help you out!
